— BROADCHURCH - Chris Chibnall —
When a little known crime drama called Broadchurch, first aired in 2013, little did I know, the impact it would have on me and my artistic life. Written by Chris Chibnall (Doctor Who, Torchwood), Broadchurch, over three series, has not only given me hours of viewing pleasure but has also become a healthy obsession. Nicely, topped off in 2015 when my some of my fanart received 1minute, 12 seconds of fame after being shown, briefly, to my TV idols on the BBC's, Graham Norton Show. It may sound insignificant, but for me, it was a huge honour.

The Artwork
Fandom aside, the artwork for this debut cover is 100% conceptual. A blind creation that came about with as a result of a brief fansite synopsis. The mere mention of a coastal location, (possibly Clevedon, Dorset, or both), some vague character plots and a few publicly released cast members.

However, as the drama proceeds, I start to notice some laughable similarities between my cover and the show. The most surprising of which comes in the first few episodes (spoiler alert). While out walking, SIO, DI Alec Hardy (Tennant), stumbles across a clifftop hut, set back from the cliff's edge. Hours later, SOCO is at the scene to help determine the scene of a crime. A plot point I couldn't have possibly have envisaged when I placed a solitary house on some cliffs in my background.

And it's these similarities that may explain why my cover started to pop up in Google searches and on several European websites. All seemingly believing that my artwork was the official release for the UK's DVD cover. I admit I was a little perturbed by the gesture. It's also a subtle reminder that, once you hit that upload button, no matter your copyright preferences, the artwork you create ceases to stay your own!

Concept versus Real:

1 - Concept: I depicted DI Alec Hardy wearing a suit, perhaps slightly more refined, and preened.
1 - In The Show: Yes. DI Alec Hardy does indeed wear a suit but is seen to be more casual and dishevelled. A little touch of Carlisle here I feel.

2 - Concept: I wanted my version of DI Hardy to sport a beard or heavy stubble. This was only taken into consideration, after all, recent parts starring David had seen him with either a clean-shaven complexion or very light stubble. Perhaps it was all too obvious in character that given his background story this was a no-brainer when it came to his chosen look.
2 - In The Show: DI Hardy sports a well-trimmed heavy stubble. And thank god for it.... :D

3 - Concept: I gave him greying hair, purposely to make him look a little more senior in his years next to his peers, suggesting experience. Plus this was a touch of Pomfrey indulgence! (And no one can shoot me for that!) :P
3 - In The Show: DI Hardy sports a choppy reddish/Brown bed mop. At least in the beginning. As the episodes continue, this seems to become a little duller, and more natural. It is evident that colouring was applied to Tennant's hair at some point. This would tally up with the fact that he had been filming The Politicians Husband months before which meant he would have to have blond highlights.

4 - Concept: I combined a clifftop scene from a Dorset beach, with a Bristol landmark as a backdrop. Geographically this is impossible! But created here for aesthetics!
4 - In The Show: Filming took place in West Bay (beautiful place) Bridport and towns outside of Bristol, Clevedon, Portishead etc.

5 - Concept: Recovery took place at night and I also placed a helicopter in my scene taking into consideration the difficulty of reaching the spot
5 - In The Show: *SPOILER* Recovery takes place in broad daylight

6 - Concept: As a backdrop, I depicted a London scene, taking into consideration that DI Hardy, would be English and from London
6 - In The Show: DI Hardy is, in fact, Scottish (OK so maybe the name Alec is the giveaway) Therefore, it would be fair to suggest he comes to Broadchurch from a Scottish division? We are not told his background but .....*SPOILER* we are told by Alec himself, that he was previously exonerated from the previous case. (This crops up throughout)

7 - Concept: I couldn't have possibly of known this at the time, but the idea of there being some sort of reference to a single house in the distance in my piece was used aesthetic and only used to create a sinister feeling
7 - In The Show: *SPOILER* A beach house/holiday home on a desolate part of the beach becomes a prominent part of the plot and appears to bear links with the young boy's disappearance

8 - Concept: The blue/green moonlight feel to the whole piece.
8 - In The Show: I actually chuckled when I saw this in the series! The full moon is often shown throughout and casts a sinister light over the cliffs of a night!
